Helmsley is situated between Thirsk and Scarborough and has plenty of cafes to stop off for refreshments and a rest from driving the country roads.

Also nearby is Rievaulx Abbey, a former Cistercian abbey which was headed by the Abbot of Rievaulx, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England until it was dissolved by Henry VIII of England in 1538. Its ruins are now a major tourist attraction, owned and maintained by English Heritage.
